Does sterling silver tarnish?

Chemically speaking, silver does not react with oxygen or water at ordinary temperatures which means it does not tarnish easily. However, other metals in the alloy (usually copper) may react with oxygen causing it to tarnish over time. The less pure the silver, the more likely it is to corrode or tarnish. Even though sterling silver does tarnish, our rhodium-plating provides maximum durability for all our jewellery. Raven Jewels jewellery is also easy to care for and clean.

What causes sterling silver to tarnish?

Common chemicals found in perfumes, hairspray, soap and lotions will cause rhodium to tarnish permanently. Also, be sure to stay away from chlorine and other bleaches, including those in swimming pools, or you’ll find your rhodium-plated jewellery turning quickly.

Can I wear my jewellery all the time?

We recommend that you take your Raven Jewels pieces off when you’re doing the housework, washing dishes, gardening, showering and exercising especially lifting weights and swimming. We also recommend that you take off your jewellery if you are working with any chemical substances.

What’s the best way to clean and take care of my plated jewels?

Cleaning and caring for your Raven Jewels is very easy. We recommend using a soft, 100% cotton cloth to wipe your jewellery and remove any signs of tarnishing. We also recommend that you use a separate cleaning cloth for gold and silver jewellery. Do not use silver liquid cleaner to clean rhodium-plated jewellery. It is too harsh and can dull or damage the rhodium plating.

How should I clean my cloudy stones?

Although Raven Jewels cubic zirconia stones are high quality, the nature of the stones means they may appear dull after time. This is due to the build-up of lotions and other oils from the skin, but can easily be fixed by careful cleaning. To clean cloudy stones, simply soak your jewellery in a small bowl of warm water mixed with dish detergent. Be sure to dry thoroughly. Alternatively, you can gently brush your stones with a soft bristled toothbrush.

How should I store my jewellery?

We strongly recommend that you keep your silver jewellery in a dry and air-tight area, such as a jewellery box or even a zip-lock bag. This will help keep tarnishing to a minimum. We also recommend that you keep your jewellery from rubbing against other items when you’re not wearing them. Even though silver jewellery is scratch resistant, it isn’t scratch proof.

Why did your jewellery turn my finger green?

All of our silver jewellery is made from 925 sterling silver, which is comprised of 92.5% silver and 7.5% other metals, such as copper. When copper alloy comes into contact with moisture (such as sweat, water or humidity) or certain acids found in products (such as lotions, household cleaning products, perfumes or soaps), it may create a chemical reaction that can turn your finger green. This reaction is nothing to worry about it – it is completely harmless, and does not indicate that the jewellery is not sterling silver. People with high body acidity are more likely to experience this green finger reaction.
